Animal welfare measures, which so far only concern pregnant sows, are to increase the surface areas that have to be allotted to these animals, and therefore the cost of buildings. Sows will have to be raised in groups for a minimum period stretching from four weeks after service to one week before farrowing. Each animal must be allowed a minimum free surface area of 2.25 sq. m for groups of six or more sows with at least 2.8 m between separations so they can move freely. For open flooring the drainage surface area must not exceed 15%, which corresponds to currently used slatted flooring. This regulation is to come into force in 2003 for new buildings and facilities. All pig farms must comply with this Directive in 2013, but in the meantime the regulations can be subject to modification.
