Transport of pigs : care with preparation and shipping

Analysis of the time course of heart rate in pigs from fattening pen to anaesthesia shows the importance of preparing the pigs in a lairage pen before loading, of transport densities and of the means used to handle the pigs.Control of these variables can improve the animals' well-being and reduce transport mortality.
