This review reports on the results of various surveys conducted by the IFIP and its partners covering a number of aspects of the use of manual labour in pig farms. The research led on technical processing centres focused largely on technical-economic challenges, in which work was analyzed as a quantitative factor. All-in all-out batch farrowing systems impose decisions on work organization and workrate that have a major impact on the approaches deployed.A nation-wide database is used to produce benchmarks and analyze long-term trends.Pig farmers and sector groups are voicing increased demand for benchmarks in response to wide-reaching structural changes in the pork production sector.Other, more sociological dimensions, working conditions and occupational risks have also been researched at different periods and by different partners.
