Canadian pork exports have risen significantly, reaching nearly 1 million tonnes in 2004. In Quebec, collective marketing strategies implemented through Encan will guarantee pork producers fair compensation while monetary developments have strongly influenced the capture of export market shares. Integrated pig farms with over 5,000 sows account for less than 25% of the breeding stock. In Quebec, there are six major integrated concerns that represent over 40% of local pig production. Faced with integration, many pig producers have grouped together to strengthen their competitive edge. In 2004, Canadian slaughterhouses processed 22.7 million pigs. With a total of 8.2 million slaughtered pigs, Quebec represents 37% of the Canadian slaughter figures. In 2005, about 87% of pigs in Canada were slaughtered at one of the six largest pig slaughterhouses. Some fifteen Trading Concerns, specialists in exportation, represent over a third of sales in Canada. The sector is enforcing rules and limitations to maintain and enhance its advantages, while Canada Porc International directs the export strategy for all the operators.
