In brief : The council order establishes a common, nationwide definition of a pig farm; one holding can have one or more pig farms. Pigs are to be identified before any transfer between pig farms or to any other destination; this transfer is called “moving”. The principle of a national pig identification database has been introduced; this database will contain records for all pig farms, and record all movements between pig farms, movements from pig farm to slaughter, to rendering, etc. When being moved, all pigs have to have a movement document (loading or unloading note including compulsory information); one copy of this document is used to update the forms register, another acts to inform the database manager of a movement operation. The pig keepers are to maintain a farm register that is to include a copy of the movement documents. Note that the pig identification database is not yet up and running; therefore, for the time being, notifications of pig movements are not required.
