On leaving the farm, the pigs must be fit for transport. The available surface area per pig will depend on weight and must permit feeding and watering. It is not desirable to unload them at a stopping point for this purpose. For long transport times the pigs should be offered feed and water ad libitum throughout the journey or after 20 hours, during the 9-hour rest stop. In a 24-hour cycle, the quantity of feed is calculated to meet their maintenance energy needs, and the quantity of water provided must be equal to 5% of their live weight. Troughs must be long enough to enable several pigs to feed at the same time. The quantity of sawdust or litter provided must ensure the absorption of urine and faeces and keep the deck comfortable and clean. After 20 hours of transport, a forced ventilation system should be used during the 9-hour stop, in addition to the side ventilation provided though the shutters.
