Feed allowances during gestation are adjusted with regard to the expected body condition of the sow at farrowing. At farrowing, sows are supposed to be fat enough in order to endure the nutritional deficiency that occurs usually during lactation. However, an excessive body fatness is to be avoided in order to limit farrowing difficulties and to stimulate appetite. The backfat thickness, when measured at the last rib, is a better predictor of body condition than the grading system used previously. Backfat thickness is determined ultrasonically 6.5 cm from the midline at the last rib. The expected value at farrowing should take into account the milking potential of the sow and the amount of feed that can be consumed during the lactation.
