Point of view: Slight contraction in global production in 2023

In 2023, global pork production is set to contract. Based on current market observations, recent market forecasts by USDA analysts seem a little cautious, and dynamics could be more pronounced.

Earlier this year, USDA analysts posted a report detailing their global market forecasts for 2023, Livestock and Poultry: World Markets and Trade. After analysis and current observations, it would appear that , resulting in a slight contraction in world production in 2023.

Growth expected in China

Despite a rather complicated 2022 for the pork sector in China, growth prospects can be envisaged for 2023. Stabilizing prices and supplies is a priority issue for the government, and since the FPA epidemic, the pork industry has undergone a major restructuring and professionalization drive to meet this challenge. With numerous investments made in farm buildings, improved technical performance, biosecurity, farmer training and the introduction of market monitoring tools, national production is set to increase by 2023.
