Point of view: Biden administration strengthens competition between slaughterhouses

In the United States, the Biden-Harris administration has strengthened the law governing purchasing practices between slaughterhouses and breeders, in order to encourage competition between slaughterhouses and thus drive up prices to better remunerate breeders. This tougher legislation comes at a time when the concentration of slaughtering activities among a handful of companies is leading to an imbalance in bargaining power.
In the United States, the Biden-Harris administration wants to promote competition between slaughterhouses by strengthening the Packers and Stockyard Act, which governs slaughterhouse purchasing and supply practices with livestock producers. The aim is to provide greater protection for livestock farmers in their commercial relations with slaughterhouses. Some twenty rules were introduced at the beginning of March, including :
- The prohibition of retaliatory measures against a breeder who explores new business relationships with a competing entity; a breeder who refuses to participate in communications with the buyer that are not required by law; or a breeder who testifies in any proceeding relating to an alleged violation of a law by an entity ;
- Prohibition on hindering breeders’ rights and their participation in associations and groups;
